Yay! You’re engaged!

You want to do an engagement session, but you’re full of questions! Where do we go? What do we wear? Do we need anything besides ourselves? This is a short guide to answer some of those questions and provide tips that will help you be prepared for your engagement session!

Location:

Is there a place that’s significant to you two? Maybe it’s the place you had your first hike together or your favorite coffee shop. If you’re still stumped on where to go, find a place you’re both interested in seeing! It could be a new location which makes for a new and exciting adventure. If you’d rather just stay home, ask your photographer if they’d do an in-home session with you!

What to Wear:

I think this is the biggest struggle for people. I always say, WEAR WHAT MAKES YOU COMFORTABLE AND WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL YOUR BEST. Planning for an engagement session doesn’t always mean running around the mall to find the perfect outfit. There’s likely something in your closet that makes you feel like a rockstar. If it’s your favorite pair of jeans and t-shirt, then wear it and own it! But if you want to get dressed up, it is a special occasion after all, so do it! If you’re unsure, feel free to send pictures of your outfit choices to your photographer, and they’ll be happy to help you make a final decision. If you can’t decide, ask your photographer for an outfit change, that way you can bring ‘em both!

Outfit Coordination:

“I know what I want to wear, but do I have my significant other match?” Stick to the same color scheme but don’t match exactly. Wearing neutrals for a timeless look is always a great route for photos that you can look back on and not say: “what was I thinking?” We’ve all been there… Need more help? Make It A Date:

This is my favorite and most important tip… Block out a solid chunk of time for your engagement session and make it a date by spending quality time together beforehand. When someone is hangry… I mean hungry, it’s hard to enjoy the session. Go out and grab some lunch or dinner before (something light that won’t make you feel sluggish). That way you’re fed and not rushing to be on time with an empty stomach.

Props:

Maybe you have something you want to incorporate into your session; a cozy blanket, a toast over champagne, balloons, a favorite board game, your dogs or cats, a save the date sign, etc. Ask your photographer and I’m sure they’d be more than happy for you to bring some props!

Posing:

This might be your first time being photographed, and that’s absolutely okay! A good photographer will know how to help you find what’s comfortable and make the session a breeze! So don’t overthink this. If it helps you along the way, ask your photographer to see an image or two right off the camera so that you know you’re doing great.

PDA:

Every photographer is different so I can’t speak for everyone… but I typically snag a couple formal portraits, and then I’ll ask you to be yourselves; make each other laugh, kiss, hug, hold, play, and have a good time. It’s my job to photograph your love, so don’t be surprised when I ask you to love the heck out of your S.O. in front of me!
